Mt. Rainier Masters Early 2011 Training Ride

Coming off a fairly successful 2010 mens masters road race season, some of the Thumbprint crew (Greg, Justin, Martin, Ryan & Jeff) headed up to Mt. Rainier to do some hill training for the 2011 season.  The weather and camaraderie were super, as were the views and road conditions.  Vehicle traffic was very light and so the lads could really use the whole lane for high-speed descending.  And the climbing - so much and so unforgiving!

The route we chose was the recommendation of a new teammate who is not pictured as he was holding the camera, plus he prefers to keep a lower profile because of a rather unfortunate misunderstanding with a beer delivery truck in Belgium and a missing herd of sheep.  He prefers we use the name 'Slobodan' even though he confesses its not his real name.  He is a new import to the Thumbprint squad, hailing originally from Slovakia and is a former Peace Race winner although he often gets the year mixed up.

He trains almost exclusively on Mt. Rainer and showed us several trails he rode into the dirt when then climbs simply weren't long enough to his liking.  Our route on the day pictured was something of a recovery day for him. From CM turnoff we rode up to Cayuse, up to Chinook, down to Ohanapecosh, over to Paradise where this photo was taken, back to Cayuse and back to the van.  We were pretty tired after the 90 miles, 9500 feet and 5 hours in the saddle.  Slobo though just laughed it off and rode his fixie back to Enumclaw where he lives out of a storage unit next to Kline's Korners.
