| Description: | Thumbprint Racing's Jeff Woerner burst from the pack on the downhill of the last lap to win the Cat 3 35+ race at the Washington State Cyclocross Championship. The Washington CX State Championship was held at Steilacoom Park on a blustery and cold day. The popular southern Puget Sound CX venue features everything from single track to barnyard chicanes, to orchards, rolling meadows, an epic lung-bursting run-up, long descent and fast pavement finish. Apparently Woerner's Swedish fan club followed him to Steilacoom. The gaggle of Nordic blonds cornered Jeff near one of the red barns, intrigued by his last-lap tactics. They queried, "Mr. Jeff, why for you to make such a gap in the last lap?" As he kicked a bit of frozen dung in the barnyard, Woerner offered, "I didn't want to take a chance with a final sprint, so I surprised the competition today with an unconventional downhill attack on the last lap, got a gap, increased it up the last hill, bombed down to the flats and held on for the win." And that's why we love 'Cross! Congratulations to Jeff Woerner for topping the podium and for another outstanding CX performance. |
